Kimbra Bell, MD, FACP, medical director of the future Northwestern Medicine Bronzeville Outpatient Care Center gave a radio interview on Voices of Better Medicine on V103 WVAZ. Dr. Bell highlighted the programs and services that are slated to come to the Bronzeville community in fall 2025 when the new center opens.
Dr. Bell also discussed how Northwestern Medicine continues to build strong community partnerships that help deliver culturally sensitive care that is supporting better health equity across Chicago.

NORTHWESTERN MEDICINE PARTICIPATES IN THE 94TH ANNUAL BUD BILLIKEN PARADE THROUGH HISTORIC BRONZEVILLE
Northwestern Medicine proudly participated in the 94th annual Bud Billiken Parade, the largest parade in the United States to celebrate African American heritage. Each year, the event serves as a kick-off to the school year for families on the South Side.
Northwestern Medicine hosted a 30-foot float that held eight riders. It was accompanied by 75 employee marchers who are members of Team NM and the Northwestern Medicine Champion Network African Descendants Chapter. The participants marched to show their support for the collaborative relationship between Northwestern Medicine and the Bronzeville community.
The parade route traveled down Martin Luther King Drive and ended at Washington Park, where a family festival was held. The Northwestern Medicine Community Affairs team and Team NM volunteers distributed school supply kits to nearly 500 children and families.

NORTHWESTERN MEDICINE CELEBRATES BLACK WOMEN'S EXPO WITH FOCUS ON HEALTH EQUITY
Northwestern Medicine participated in the 30th annual Black Women’s Expo on August 4 through 6 at McCormick Place in Chicago. The event is the longest-running intergenerational exposition for Black women and their families.
During the event, Northwestern Medicine hosted a panel presentation and Q&A on health equity. The panelists shared key insights across their respective specialties and championed self-advocacy for Black women to support better health. The panel, led by Kimbra Bell, MD, FACP, medical director for the new Bronzeville Outpatient Center, also included:
Dr. Burnett-Zeigler also signed copies of her book, Nobody Knows The Trouble I’ve Seen – The Emotional Lives of Black Women, for 100 of the event’s attendees.
As a corporate sponsor, Northwestern Medicine hosted a large booth space with community health workers offering blood pressure checks. More than 30 volunteers from Northwestern Medicine shared health information, resources and information about the new Bronzeville Outpatient Center planned to open in fall 2025. They also collected behavioral health surveys to help identify and plan appropriate programming that supports mental and behavioral health needs.

Entering its 13th year, this innovative academic enrichment program recruits high-achieving ninth grade students interested in health science careers. The goal is to ignite curiosity through hands-on and interactive learning experiences. In 2023, Northwestern Medicine expanded the program to two Bronzeville high schools on the DuSable Campus: Daniel Hale Williams Medical Prep and Bronzeville Scholastic Institute.
The Scholars Program provides academic resources, mentorship and guidance for students through graduation. It includes an annual, paid, four-week summer intensive immersion in college-level content taught by faculty from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.
